Skin Boosters (물광주사)
Korean: 물광주사 (Mulgwang jusa) · Also called: 스킨부스터 ("water-light injection") · Category: Injectables · Last reviewed: 2026-05-01
A category of intradermal hyaluronic acid microinjections used to deeply hydrate the skin and produce the lustrous "water-glass" quality (물광 피부) prized in Korean beauty culture. The category includes both unbranded clinic protocols and branded products such as SkinVive, Profhilo, Restylane Vital, Juvederm Volite, and NCTF 135HA.
What it is
물광주사 is a Korean clinical protocol category, not a single product. The classic Korean protocol uses an automated multi-needle injector (often called 물광건, "water-light gun") to deliver diluted cross-linked hyaluronic acid (typically 12 to 24 mg/mL) or non-cross-linked HA into the superficial dermis at depths of approximately 1.0 to 1.5 mm. Coverage is full-face. The term 물광 literally translates to "water-light" or "water-glow" and refers to the dewy, luminous skin quality the protocol targets.
International branded products adapted into Korean clinical practice include Restylane Vital (Galderma), Juvederm Volite (Allergan), SkinVive by Juvederm, NCTF 135HA (Filorga/Fillmed), and Profhilo (IBSA). SkinVive launched in Korea in 2024 as one of the earliest Asian markets, and W Korea highlighted it as the next evolution of 물광주사.
How it works
Cross-linked HA skinboosters such as Restylane Vital, Juvederm Volite, and SkinVive act as hydration reservoirs. They bind interstitial water through electrostatic interactions, and the resulting volumetric expansion mechanically stimulates fibroblast stretch-activated receptors (CD44, integrins), upregulating collagen type I and elastin synthesis. Post-marketing data for the SkinVive formulation showed increases in aquaporin expression after treatment, suggesting cellular hydration signaling beyond simple water retention.
Profhilo (IBSA) contains 64 mg of total HA per 2 mL vial, split into 32 mg high-molecular-weight and 32 mg low-molecular-weight HA. It is not BDDE cross-linked but stabilized through IBSA's NAHYCO Hybrid Technology using thermal hydrogen bonding. The high-MW component interacts with CD44 receptors to drive fibroblast proliferation and pro-collagen synthesis. The low-MW fragments stimulate angiogenesis. NCTF 135HA combines non-cross-linked HA with 59 active ingredients including vitamins, amino acids, coenzymes, nucleic acids, and minerals delivered via mesotherapy-style injection.
Origin and development
The term 물광주사 emerged organically in Korean aesthetic clinic marketing in the late 2000s and early 2010s as physicians adapted European mesotherapy multi-needle injection devices into a standardized Korean clinical protocol covering the full face. The category is a Korean adaptation of the international "skinbooster" concept, distinctly Korean in vocabulary and clinical operationalization.
SkinVive by Juvederm received FDA Premarket Approval (PMA P110033/S059) on May 11, 2023, as the first FDA-approved HA injectable indicated specifically for skin smoothness improvement in the US. Korea received MFDS approval for SkinVive in 2024.
Regulatory status
| Jurisdiction | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Korea (MFDS) | Approved (multiple products) | SkinVive, Juvederm Volite, Restylane Vital, Profhilo, and NCTF 135HA are all MFDS-approved. Classic clinic-protocol 물광주사 uses MFDS-approved HA products administered intradermally |
| United States (FDA) | SkinVive only | SkinVive is the only FDA-approved HA injectable indicated for skin quality improvement in the US (2023). Profhilo, Juvederm Volite, NCTF 135HA, and Restylane Vital are not FDA-approved for skin quality indications. Use in the US outside cleared indications is off-label |
| European Union (CE) | CE-marked (all major branded products) | SkinVive, Juvederm Volite, Restylane Vital, Profhilo, NCTF 135HA all CE-marked |
Typical protocol
- Classic Korean 물광주사: pneumatic multi-needle injector (5 to 9 needles, 30 to 32 gauge) at 1.0 to 1.5 mm intradermal depth. 2 mL HA per session. Initial series of 3 to 4 sessions at 2 to 3 week intervals. Maintenance every 3 to 6 months. Topical numbing cream 30 to 60 minutes prior. Procedure time 15 to 20 minutes. Micro-papules visible for 1 to 3 days.
- Profhilo (BAP technique): 2 sessions 4 weeks apart, 10 injection points (5 per side), 1 mL per side. Maintenance every 3 to 6 months.
- SkinVive: initial treatment plus optional touch-up at 1 month. Results through 6 months. 5 mL total per session in multiple 0.05 mL aliquots per cheek.
Commonly reported effects
Intended effects include improved hydration, elasticity, luminosity, and texture. SkinVive's FDA pivotal study (n=209) documented the most common adverse events as redness, lumps and bumps, swelling, bruising, pain, tenderness, firmness, discoloration, and itching, most resolving within seven days.
Risk of intravascular injection applies to any intradermal injectable, and standard filler-class warnings apply to SkinVive's US label. Profhilo's low inflammatory response profile and absence of BDDE cross-linker minimize granuloma risk. Its low viscosity reduces vascular occlusion risk relative to higher-G' structural fillers. The classic Korean micro-papule pattern is expected and temporary.
Korea vs US availability
Per 모두닥 (Modoodoc) 2026 platform data, classic 물광주사 with generic HA (2 cc) starts at approximately ₩70,000. SkinVive 1 cc at a Gangnam clinic is approximately ₩233,200. Restylane Vital 2 cc at premium clinics reaches approximately ₩790,000. In the United States, SkinVive sessions cost approximately $350 to $900.
물광주사 as a category is not replicated in the US under the same name or format. The closest US equivalent is SkinVive or off-label intradermal Restylane, neither of which uses the Korean multi-needle injector format. International clients visit Korea for the full protocol range, physician-supervised combination programs, and pricing approximately 50 to 80 percent lower than comparable US procedures. A Yeosungjoseon feature on Korean medical tourism listed 물광 as a primary demand category for foreign clients alongside Rejuran and lifting procedures.
What to research before
- Confirm what product is in the syringe. "물광주사" is a category, not a brand. Ask which specific HA product (SkinVive, Volite, Profhilo, Restylane Vital, or generic) is being injected and at what concentration.
- Verify the operator and the clinic. Multi-needle intradermal injection is operator-skill-dependent. Our credential verification guide covers KSPRS and dermatology specialty registries.
- Be aware of "FDA-approved" framing. Only SkinVive is FDA-approved for skin quality. Other branded products in this category are not FDA-approved for the indication.
